The Green Pool Problem in Perth
Perth’s hot climate creates the perfect environment for algae to take hold in swimming pools. When water temperatures climb above 25 degrees Celsius — which happens for much of the year in Western Australia — algae can multiply at an astonishing rate. A pool that looks slightly cloudy on Monday can be thick green by Wednesday if the chlorine level has dropped.
Green pools are one of the most common problems we encounter across Perth, from Joondalup in the north to Fremantle in the south and throughout the western suburbs. Holiday periods, rental property changeovers, and equipment failures are the most frequent causes. Regardless of how your pool ended up green, our multi-step recovery process will have it back to safe, clear swimming water within days.
Why Professional Treatment Is Essential
Many pool owners attempt to fix a green pool themselves by throwing in bags of chlorine from the hardware store. While the intention is right, this approach frequently fails for several reasons.
First, the concentration of chlorine needed to kill established algae is significantly higher than what most people expect. A pool with heavy algae bloom may need ten times the normal chlorine dose to achieve “breakpoint chlorination” — the level at which all organic matter is destroyed. Under-dosing simply wastes chemicals without solving the problem.
Second, the filter is a critical part of the recovery process. Dead algae must be filtered out of the water, and this requires repeated backwashing or cartridge cleaning throughout the treatment. If the filter is not managed correctly, it becomes clogged with dead algae and stops working, leaving the pool cloudy.
Third, water chemistry must be brought into balance after the shock treatment. pH, alkalinity, and stabiliser levels all affect how effectively chlorine works. If these parameters are not corrected, the pool may turn green again within days.
Our Green Pool Recovery Process
Initial Assessment
We begin with a thorough assessment of your pool. This includes testing the water chemistry, evaluating the severity of the algae bloom on a scale from mild (light green tint) to severe (opaque, dark green), and inspecting your pump, filter, and chlorinator. This assessment determines the treatment plan and gives you an accurate quote.
Professional-Grade Shock Treatment
We apply a calculated dose of professional-grade liquid chlorine based on your pool’s volume and the severity of the algae. We also adjust the pH to the optimal range for chlorine activity, which is between 7.0 and 7.2. At this pH level, chlorine is at its most effective — something that many DIY attempts overlook.
Active Filtration Management
After the shock treatment, we run your filtration system continuously and manage the backwash or cartridge cleaning cycle. As the algae dies, it turns white and is captured by the filter. Without regular backwashing during this period, the filter pressure builds and filtration stops. We manage this process to keep the water clearing efficiently.
Follow-Up Visit
We return within 48 to 72 hours to assess the progress. By this point, most pools have cleared significantly. We vacuum any dead algae that has settled on the pool floor, deep clean the filter, and perform a full water chemistry rebalance including pH, alkalinity, stabiliser, and calcium hardness. We only consider the job complete when the water is crystal clear and all chemistry parameters are within the recommended range.
Pricing for Green Pool Recovery in Perth
Our green pool recovery service is priced between $300 and $600 depending on the size of your pool and the severity of the algae growth.
- Mild green pool (light green tint, can still see the bottom): From $300
- Moderate green pool (solid green, cannot see the bottom): From $400
- Severe green pool (dark green or black, thick algae on surfaces): From $500
These prices include the initial treatment, all chemicals, filter cleaning, and the follow-up visit. For severely neglected pools that require additional visits or a full drain and acid wash, we will advise you during the initial assessment.
Preventing Future Green Pool Outbreaks
Once your pool is recovered, we strongly recommend setting up a regular servicing plan to prevent it from happening again. Most green pool incidents are caused by a period of inadequate chlorination, which regular professional visits can prevent. We service pools across Perth including Mount Claremont, Claremont, Nedlands, Subiaco, Scarborough, and surrounding areas.
Do not let a green pool sit untreated — the longer algae is left, the harder and more expensive the recovery becomes. Contact us today for a fast response and get your pool back to its best.
Our Process
Assessment
We assess the severity of the algae bloom, test the water chemistry, and inspect your equipment to determine the best treatment plan.
Shock Treatment
We apply a professional-grade chlorine shock at the correct concentration for your pool size and algae severity, far stronger than off-the-shelf products.
Filtration and Cleaning
We run and backwash the filter repeatedly, brush walls and floor to dislodge algae, and skim dead algae from the surface as the treatment works.
Follow-Up and Rebalancing
We return within 48 to 72 hours to verify the water has cleared, vacuum settled debris, deep clean the filter, and rebalance all water chemistry parameters.
